What is STEAM Education?
STEAM = Science & Technology interpreted through Engineering & the Arts, all based in Mathematical elements.
STEAM education integrates the study of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics by using scientific inquiry and engineering design as unifying processes. STEAM education incorporates the “A” for the arts – recognizing that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are best developed through exposure to the arts. STEAM emphasizes innovation and the development of problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills through student-focused, rigorous, relevant, and authentic learning.

Grade 4 students use materials provided to answer the question. "How can I create a pathway for electrical current to flow?"
Mrs. Ranken, Pomaika'i STEAM Teacher, joined a group of Maui teachers for Code.org training in computer science. Participants learned the basics of coding and Mrs. Ranken even hacked into the instructor's mini drone and flew it across the room using only her brain and the iPhone!
On, 9/19 and 9/26, several of our teachers, along with educators from different Maui schools, were fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the Island Energy Inquiry Professional Development Workshop. The Ka Hei program provided teachers with training, materials, and hands-on experiences that will allow them to effectively impelement science curriculum in the classroom. Mahalo to Mrs. Sakuma for capturing our learning and thank you to all the teachers who devoted two Saturdays to further their learning!
